THE WRITER'S GOAL

Writers' goals are as wide and varied as a bookstore's shelves. Mason stakes out the communicative event as his objective. "Communication is the purpose of all writing, and that's my aim. Stephen King said that, in good writing, the reader discovers the writer's thoughts on the page, in a kind of mind-reading or ESP - the reader sees into the brain of the writer. That's rich communication. That's my motivation."

Mason wants his work to be consumed and digested like a meal by the reader. "The writing should lead us to a well-set table, and it should give us the taste, texture, and smell of the food while capturing the difference between the meat and the mustard." Paraphrasing McLuhan, the meal is the message.
